"Monk b: 1942 in NYC. composer, performer, director, vocalist, filmmaker, and choreographer. At the age of three, Monk was diagnosed with strabismus and her mother signed her up to a Dalcroze eurhythmics programme, a technique which integrates music with movement. Monk says that it _has influenced everything I've done. It's why dance and movement and film are so integral to my music. It's why I see music so visually. "William Parker: doson ngoni, shakuhachi, bass duduk, Serbian flute in F#, Ney flute Cooper-Moore: ashimba, hoe-handle harp; Hamid Drake: frame drum, drum kit. Heart Trio features three lifelong-devoted fellow travelers on the path of healing through sound. They have been 'core' collborators since 2012. Heart Trio creates balancing music in a world which day to day is more evidently filled with the exponential effect of increasingly grotesque inequity, a world where wars continue to be started and maintained by men adept at manipulation and a thorough disregard for the sanctity of life -- work that is antithetical to destruction. - bandcamp notes. Wiki sez....In October, 1959, Bean returned to New York City after accepting Tony Bennett's offer to join his band. He remained with Bennett's band for less than one year. Hal Gaylor, who had been Bennett's bassist, assembled a trio with Bean and pianist Walter Norris; they called themselves The Trio and recorded this album. Gaylor said the trio had great difficulty in finding work and disbanded shortly after recording. Bean performed with Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, and John Lewis, recording albums with Mann and Lewis. He returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, retiring in 1986."
Ros Sereysothea is widely considered the greatest female vocalist from the Cambodian “Golden Age” of film and music, a period from 1955 - 1975. She was born in Battambang, Cambodia on November 6th, 1948 and is presumed to have died during the Khmer Rouge genocide, between 1975 and 1979. - Youtube. This recording was likely from the early 60s. Continuing with a review by Deanne Sole 'Electric Cambodia may be one of the saddest and most enraging compilations released this year — not for the music, but for the history. The performers are dead, all dead, or “vanished” into the Killing Fields — murdered, presumably, although the how is a mystery. ' Click link for full article.

"Zodiac Suite is a series of 12 pieces of jazz music written by the American jazz pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981) and first performed in 1945. The suite makes use of elements of classical music alongside jazz, and Williams was influenced by modernism when writing and arranging it. Each song in the suite is inspired by an astrological sign and musicians or performers who were born under it. Williams began writing music for Zodiac Suite in 1942 and finished the composition in 1945. The second of eleven children, Williams was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. A musical prodigy, at the age of two, she was able to pick out simple tunes and by the age of three, she was taught piano by her mother.Mary Lou Williams played piano out of necessity at a very young age; her white neighbors were throwing bricks into her house until Williams began playing the piano in their homes. At the age of six, she supported her ten half-brothers and sisters by playing at parties. She began performing publicly at the age of seven when she became known admiringly in Pittsburgh as _The Little Piano Girl_. She became a professional musician at the age of 15, citing Lovie Austin as her greatest influence.- wiki"

A trove, just released. This cut was found stashed away in Mitchell’s own personal collection, this tape was labelled Save Magic by engineer Henry Lewy, recording Mitchell from the control room when she was mid-improvisational flow. The expansive, classically inflected piano piece would become the bedrock of Paprika Plains, the visionary centrepiece of 1977 release of Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. (see link for more) From Tom Moon/Echolocater: 'Maybe its noodling, maybe its just eavesdropping as she tests out textures....' I'This and many more rare, unreleased gems can be found on the forthcoming ‘Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 4 - The Asylum Years (1976-1980)’ out October 4, 2024 via Rhino. - youtube notes.

"Sure on this shining night, Of starmade shadows round, Kindness must watch for me this side of the ground. The late year lies down the north. All is healed, all is health. High summer holds the earth. Hearts all whole.Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder wandering far alone. Of shadows on the stars. Sure on this shining night."
